  • In 2013 I was invited to participate in the ETLE Universe as one of 5 illustrators tasked with creating a graphic novel to interact with and enrich the group’s performance works. This finally came to fruition in May 2015 with the release of ETLE Ills along with an installation of art from the book at The Loft on Classon.
  • As my first fully narrative comic, I spent a long time exploring character and costume designs and taking inspiration from artists like mangaka Hagio Moto and Junji Ito. I often pair text with my paintings and drawings, but mixing these into a story in the world of ETLE was a real challenge!
  • I ultimately decided to focus on a side story, titled “What’s Keeping You Cleaved,” exploring the consequences of revolution and time travel on a singular relationship. I’ve always loved speculating on the hows and whys of the secondary characters of my favorite fiction, so this was a natural path.
  • I opted to steer from my typical full-color hand-painted style for a mix of analog and digital inking, and used manga-style screen tones for the first time.
  • I also made use of .gif glitch techniques for the full color pages to emphasize the disruption of time and reality.
  • Copies of ETLE Illus are available for purchase here.
